"It's not the democratization of [game tools], it's the acceleration of them."
Game Developer's Bryant Francis sits down with João Orvalho, CTO at Didimo, and explores the opportunity of using AI-powered game development tools to accelerate production while protecting the rights of artists and their productions.
The power of AI for character creation and populating game worlds cannot be understated as game studio budgets come under pressure in this highly volatile industry. Didimo's Popul8 software ensures artists and technical artists have the strongest toolkit in achieving maximum quality and quantity by minimising the tedious tasks of asset fitting, animation retargeting and more.
Generative AI is a hot topic that divides the industry. At Didimo, we have taken extensive steps in building up our technology through patents and traditional approaches to IP. This ensures that the AI within the Popul8 software is ahead of regulation by using only proprietary data or data explicitly licensed from research institutions.
We asked what dataset this avatar tool was pulling from, Alau and Orvalho explained that it was all proprietary data or data licensed from research institutions. "We have our own internal model built on [original] scans, Orvalho said. He explained that it's all based on research into how to render faces in three dimensions, conducted first over 15 years at a university, and then in the last six years of the company's history.
Didimo continues to innovate in 3D character creation ensuring the very best technology is at the finger tips of studios. Check out the full story here.
